A new kind of spa… July 16, 2008

Info that I had a burning desire to share.

The Fierce Women Who Dish got together last night for dinner. One of the many subjects that we talked about was the latest in medi-spas:

“First came the “medical spa,” or medi spa, offering dermatology services in a retail setting. The medi spa begat the dental spa, bringing tooth bleaching to storefronts nationwide. The dental spa begat the podiatry spa.

“And now comes the first medi spa in Manhattan wholly dedicated to strengthening and grooming a woman’s genital area….

“With the ubiquity of pornography, the pelvis had already become a marketable area for modification, ranging from the Brazilian bikini wax to genital surgery referred to as vaginal “rejuvenation.” Doctors have even coined a term for such genital “beautification”: cosmetogynecology or cosmogynecology.”

OK. We can now take our vaginas to a gyno spa and increase our pelvic fitness or go in for a little cosmogynecology.”

Is this a good thing? Bad thing? And what’s next – Camp Kegel? I would love to hear Eve Ensler’s reaction. What’s yours?

I think it may send the message that our genitals are yet another area that needs ‘beautifying,’ which bothers me. It seems that the cosmetic industry will not rest until every single area of the female body is transformed from its natural state…

    Mary,
You’re right. One of the challenges we face as women is responding to the free market, consumerism that will continue to press us to beautify, perfect so that it can thrive. We need to do what is best for us to thrive.
